When is it time to buy a new car? Is it when you need to start making repairs? Is it when you can afford a new vehicle? This is a dilemma I am currently facing. Is it worth keeping your old vehicles knowing you will have problems with them but the chance of having a problem out ways the new monthly payment you will have to endure.

I have two vehicles a Dodge Durango and Chrysler Concorde both about ten years old. Both of my cars have over 140,000 miles on them and have needed to be fixed over the last couple of years. Is it time for me to bite the bullet and trade at least one in or should I hold off. If I had to choose between them it would be the Concorde it has about 20,000 less miles on it and already has major repairs done to it. Three years ago it needed a new engine, then more recently a new timing chain both pretty expensive fixes. The engine cost well over $2000 and the timing chain around $1200 but the car has been paid off for 5 years. How I see it I made out, $3300 over 5 years breaks down to $660 per year or $55 per month. It’s a lot better than a $350 per month payment.

Our Durango is also paid off but has more miles on it The only real problems it has had has been around the air condition unit and a mishap by my children. My kids jammed change into the CD player causing the radio to short out. The total to fix both was $1300. The reason we would keep the Durango is because it is more useful to us.

So my dilemma again is, is it the best time to trade it in? My wife and I have been deliberating over it for a while now. I have a few reservations about getting a new vehicle. The first of course is taking on a monthly bill. We would want another SUV if we purchase. We do a lot of outdoor activities, snowboarding, canoeing, camping ect., so we need something to lug our gear, kids and clothes. With our Durango also older we know over the next few years we will also need to replace that car. So to us it just makes sense to get the SUV first as a more reliable vehicle we can feel safe in on longer trips.

Reliability is our 2nd reason we are considering a new vehicle. Since both of our automobiles are older there is a reliability fear that looms over us on longer trips. This would be solved with a new vehicle.

Another issue to look at would be our insurance rates. They would go up by at least $100 per month with a new automobile with full coverage. Even if I applied all the discount auto insurance techniques I know.

It may not be time to buy right now with the holidays coming up and our finances kind of low but this is something we will need to look at within the next year. The reliability and safety factors out way the new cost we will have to endure. After the holidays we will be on a automobile hunt. Should we purchase brand new or something with low miles a couple of years old. Hmme, This sounds like something to write about next.

A common misconception when it comes to car modifications is that it takes a lot of money in order to have a great looking car. If you have a Mitsubishi 3000GT, you can prove everybody wrong. Since President Bush announced an agenda for weaning the country from dependency on foreign oil, new ethanol plants have been popping up across the nation.

Ethanol demand is rising. If you fuel your car in the U.S., you are putting ethanol in your gas tank because regular gasoline now contains at least 10 percent ethanol. And many gas stations are replacing their mid-grade gasoline with E85, which is 85 percent ethanol.

The strategy seems to be working. According to Bob Dinneen, president of the Renewable Fuels Association, the U.S. has already reduced its fuel consumption considerably.

The increased use of ethanol is good news in terms of energy independence and environmental friendliness. However, its use can form acids and lead to oxidation of internal engine parts if you do not use the right motor oil.

Getting residual values
This will take a little homework and shoe leather.
1. Identify several cars having similar features that can be leased for similar monthly payments.

The Internet may not be the best place to try to get this information. Surveys show that 60% of people looking to buy or lease a car do some searching on the Internet. This has made the manufacturers less willing to disclose residual values. In fact, some of the Big Three (GM, Ford, Chrysler) will not print them in a quotation from the dealer.

These values are at best educated guesses
Residual value amounts are made by companies (or the car’s manufacturer) as to what the car will be worth after a certain number of years. It is not a value you can take to the bank. The manufacturer might even inflate the value in order to increase the sale of leased cars, where by increasing the residual value the monthly lease payment is decreased a little bit and may be more completive vis-à-vis another make of car.

Decide on term of ownership
Before asking for the residual value of the lease, decide on how long you plan on owning the car. Leases are offered for up to five years, or 60 months. Just be sure to get a residual value for the number of years you plan on owning the car.

By Federal law all pertinent financial data must be provided before signing a contract.
Ask any salesperson for a lease offer, and insist on the residual value. He may give it to you only verbally, since every effort is being made to hide this from you. Insist on it, and they will deliver the value. Say Thank You and move on

Financial gain
For any two vehicles, whether a Sedan, Van, SUV, or light truck, costing about $25,000, it is not unusual for the trade-in value after three years to differ by up to $3,000. This is money that stays in your pocket. So the effort to do this fact finding before buying the car is handsomely rewarded.

Financing terms
The interest rate that determines the monthly payment is immaterial. All that is to be compared are two cars for which the monthly payment is essentially identical, and then develop an estimate of what each might be worth in x number of years.
It’s essentially money-in vs. money-out. If you pay the same monthly payment for car A as for car B, will car A cost $3,000 more to trade it in for the new model A than if you had bought car B?
